Three decades of innovation: Celebrating Cablotech's 30th anniversary

Company

29 November 2023| Company

Cablotech celebrates its 30th anniversary by reflecting on its past, present and future. The evolution from the home garage in 1993, the challenges of the economic crisis, the expansions through innovations and modernization that have made it the solid reality in the wiring, electrical panels and electromechanical assembly sector that it is today.
But his history is yet to be written.

Cablotech 30° - 1993 - 2003 - Logo

Cablotech 30° logo (1993-2023)

30 years… if I think about it, I find it hard to realize it: an important goal achieved with a lot of commitment and sacrifice, but also with strong professional and personal satisfaction. A story of Italian entrepreneurship and passion, which is intertwined with that of my family and the territory in which we were born and in which we are still rooted and recognize ourselves today. Trying to retrace these 30 years, there are many moments to mention… starting from the beginning.

The beginning of the adventure

It seems like yesterday: it was November 1993 when one evening my dad brought home the first drawings. I was in my bedroom, I looked at them carefully and, intrigued, I went back and forth from the room, going to ask for explanations… Dad had been working for years at Stern Weber, a company producing dental instruments, and his then employer Baldissera gave him (or rather, gave us) the opportunity to start creating the first nucleus of what has now become Cablotech.
We started working on wiring in the garage at home. At Christmas of that same year the first machines arrived, we bought them from what, over the years, has become a historical supplier of the company and long-term partner.
After the first six months, the garage at home began to be tight and already in mid-1994 we asked Valeria, our neighbor, for her garage to expand our activities. Very soon that too began to be tight, and in 1995 we decided to move to Ozzano dell’ Emilia in what was the first real company warehouse.

Milestones and highlights of growth

With the entry into the warehouse and the workload increasing, 1995 was also the year in which my father left his previous job to dedicate himself full time to the family business, and we made the first staff hires. I am proud to say that our first and historic employee Fiorella and the first two girls hired Gianna and Elena are still with us today, 30 years later.
1995 was also the year we began to expand our range and clientele. One customer in particular, Mr. Biagi, gave us the opportunity to make the first real “jump” forward. And I must say that we did it successfully: just think that already in 1996 we returned to Osteria Grande, a hamlet of Castel S. Pietro Terme, this time not in the home garage but in a larger warehouse than the one in Ozzano.
The relationship with this first customer has continued over the years, the partnership has strengthened to the joy and satisfaction on both sides.
From 1996 to 2000 we acquired what over time has become and is our first customer by turnover.
Another milestone of growth was in the summer of 1999, when we decided to take the “big step”: we went from being rented in 600 m² to acquiring the first warehouse of 2,000 m². And so in January 2000 we settled in what is still our headquarters, in Via Umbria 6 in Osteria Grande. An investment that proved to be positive, since the years from 2000 to 2008 were of great growth both from the point of view of turnover and from that of investments.

Overcoming obstacles

Even Cablotech has not been exempt from the market uncertainties and major economic crises that have characterized the past decades. From 2008 to 2012 in particular, with the subprime mortgage crisis, a period of recession was triggered, to which we however responded with positivity and continued to invest. Instead of “pulling the oars in the boat” we thought about possible new market outlets and about creating business opportunities, even outside national borders, and it was precisely in 2012 that we participated in the first international fair, the Swisstech in Basel. Thanks to this approach to the market, things changed for the better at the end of 2012: work began to grow again and in those years we purchased another 1,000 m² of warehouse.
We didn’t stop, on the contrary: with a view to continuous growth between 2012 and 2015 we laid the foundations for the technical office. I still remember the first CAD which allowed us to introduce new services and to support customers more and more closely, improving and optimizing our commercial proposals.

Challenges and important awards

As the years passed, the needs changed, the complexity increased, and between 2016 and 2017 we registered the company logo in Italy.
At the same time, investments in suitable workplaces and cutting-edge equipment never stopped; by working well with a continuous growth trend, we started to be “tight” again.
The warehouse that had been previously purchased needed maintenance, but we didn’t want to do a “simple renovation”, we wanted the spaces to be designed and conceived to best meet the needs of the company and the people who worked there. At the end of 2018 we then commissioned a consulting firm to redesign the production layout of both warehouses.
It was an immense job, but after 12 months of planning at the end of 2019 the final project was drafted.
The real challenge, also won, was to carry out the renovation of the company headquarters without interrupting production, the management of orders without affecting customer satisfaction, always in the first place. It was not easy: we renovated 400 m² at a time, we moved the production areas 4 times to allow the work to continue, we remade floors, light, data and air systems.
A great satisfaction was to respect the timetable, because within 12 months we completed the work. But looking at the operation after 4 years, I can say that the greatest joy came later, in fact, it still comes every day, when customers, consultants, suppliers, partners and collaborators come to visit our company and realize how “human scale” it is and designed to be a productive and positive environment.

Looking to the future

The restructuring of our company warehouse has also radically changed the way we work, orienting it in a modern and digital key, laying the foundations of what will be the future of Cablotech. For example, we initially introduced the first two automatic warehouses, which today have already become five, located between the two production areas. As Valter would say: “We like to cycle”. And in fact between 2021 and 2022 we worked to restyle the corporate identity, equipping ourselves with a new logo and a new website, essential to make ourselves known to customers and potential customers, throughout Italy and beyond. A new layout, of course, to present traditional values and skills. We have also structured ourselves at a corporate governance level, adopting the 231 organizational model to better define the corporate structure and the management of sensitive processes. And here we are at the end of 2022, when we decided to implement a MRP (Material Requirements Planning) system to manage through software the acquisition plans of the materials necessary to meet production plans and customer demand. Personally, it is a choice that I remember with transport and affection because, just 12 months ago, it turned out to be the last decision made together with my father. In about 10 months we were able to make the switch and I have to say that the results are visible, concrete, tangible! This not only “technical”, but also cultural step in the company has involved a lot of effort, and for this I thank everyone. It was another piece of a path of modernization and digitalization, of a “revolution” that began over 4 years ago… which does not stop and, indeed, increasingly affects all spheres of safety, environment and quality, contributing to improving our daily way of operating.

Thank you

30 years is not a short time, it is a good slice of working life between ups and downs, goals achieved and a long way to go together… maintaining a balance is not always easy, but I believe that Cablotech has succeeded and the goal is to continue growing in a positive mood for all the time we will spend together.
A few months before celebrating the company’s thirtieth year of activity, my father Valter embarked on another journey: if we are here today to celebrate this important milestone, we owe it to him, to his determination, to his somewhat gruff manner in which he has guided me over the years. That is why, day after day, we put more and more effort into carrying on that entrepreneurial journey started by him 30 years ago. I took up the baton and the role of General Manager from him, welcoming the challenges that will come with the awareness that all together we will carry them forward in the best possible way, trying to never take anything for granted.
I therefore thank my parents, Dad’s will and determination, his attachment to the company and the attention he had for this thirty-year anniversary. I think he could be proud of us all…
I strongly thank my brother Mirko for the support of these months and for the time he will dedicate to me in the near future. I thank everyone, starting from the people who are in the company with us every day for the commitment they have always shown. In recent months, after Valter’s passing, the desire to continue as best as possible and the closeness shown to the whole family has been palpable.
I thank suppliers, partners and collaborators for the affection and esteem shown for their sensitivity towards us.

In these first thirty years of dedication, passion and innovation, we have established ourselves as a point of reference in our sector. We look to the future with the determination of those who know that every goal achieved is just a new starting point. Together, with commitment and sharing challenges and achievements, we will continue to build a successful tomorrow.
Because the history of Cablotech has yet to be written.

Valter con noi

Valter with us...

Company

10 April 2023

The sudden disappearance of Valter Golfieri, our boss, leaves a void, but his teaching and personality remain alive in us His final lesson underscores the fragility of happiness and encourages us to pursue ambitious goals in his memory.

Valter Golfieri - 1950 - 2023

Valter Golfieri (1950 – 2023)

Our boss, Valter, left like this, suddenly, leaving us all shocked and with a huge sense of emptiness inside. But this doesn’t stop any of us from thinking about all that he has left us: professionally and humanly. In the company, in every corner of it, his voice echoes. Sometimes severe tones, often playful and ironic, but always faithful to his inimitable personality which made him special in the eyes of those who knew him.

His humility was and will be a teacher of life for many people and time will never fade the memory. His joy and positivity will help many of us to overcome moments of difficulty that certainly won’t be lacking.

We must not believe even for a moment that everything is over now, because this is just the beginning of a long journey. Now we need to find his smile in the blue sky and run to reach increasingly ambitious goals as he would like.

Strengthened by his teaching, it will be necessary to continue on the path he traced. This time he gave us the greatest of teachings, that is that between life and death there is only a moment and the fragility of happiness is hidden in it.

We got a makeover - Part 2: New logo and new website

Company

20 November 2022| Company

Thirty years after its establishment, Cablotech, a leading wiring harness and assembly company, introduces itself to customers and suppliers in a new look: new brand identity and website, values and skills as always.

A new brand identity

Now that the production layout was completed (see Part 1) and the appearance of the plant changed, we felt different and we wanted an image that would reflect our renewed identity: so we decided to change our logo.
This rebranding was not an easy choice: we were fond of the historical brand that we had used since the 2000s.
However, we have always been among those who, when the wind of change blows, prefer windmills to walls.
So we redid the make-up.
At this stage with heavy emotional and symbolic implications, we chose as our traveling companion a very talented designer: Alessandro Scarpellini, who was able to create a new and contemporary logo that makes us feel true to ourselves and at the same time projected into the future.
Because a rebranding is precisely what happened: a funambulistic balancing act between past and future, in which it is important to know well what should be preserved and what should be radically transformed.
And so, thanks to Alessandro’s vision, we have chosen to keep some essential requirements of recognisability, the historical corporate colours that represent the founding values of our company – those that, like any self-respecting winning horse, cannot be changed: attention to the quality of work and ecological and social sustainability of production, the world of work seen as an engine of progress for society. Again the pursuit of full customer satisfaction as well as the spread of the Made in Italy culture.
The stages of conception and graphic realization, however, do not exhaust the operation of rebranding a logo, which demands a further strategic step: filing and registration in Italy and abroad.
Here another protagonist of our journey makes his appearance: Federico Faggioli of Studio Torta, who literally ‘took us by the hand’ and led us, with confidence and competence, into the fascinating but intricate world of the industrial property code and its bureaucratic procedures.
In less than a year, thanks to him, we completed the process in Italy and in the new markets to which we opened: Switzerland, Austria, France, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany.

Cablotech Website Mockup

A new website

To close the circle, a new website in perfect agreement with the exciting identity operation we were undertaking was essential.
Another opportunity to create value.
To effectively communicate the new corporate image, we thought about a radical modernization in graphics, usability and website performance so that it could offer users the best possible experience.
To do so, we used the know-how of White Studio, a creative team we have known forever and which once again lived up to our expectations by redefining in graphic and functional terms the interface with which we present ourselves to the world as we are: coming from far away and heading even farther.
At the end of the journey, tired but happy, we can say that the new image conveyed by the restyling coincides perfectly with the concrete ideas, content and ‘substance’ that we have always carried.
And we hope to be able to share with our long-standing clients and with those who would like to become them the exhilaration of this new adventure.

The dream of Valter Golfieri and of his son Massimiliano, today respectively Managing Director and Production Manager of Cablotech, a leading cabling manufacturer and ACEPER associate, began in Osteria Grande, a hamlet of Castel San Pietro Terme (BO).

[…]

With a series of combined interventions, Cablotech has also shown itself to be a virtuous example from an environmental point of view:

  • From the separate collection of plastic, paper and cardboard to the disposal of processing waste in compliance with the environmental laws governing the complex sector of special waste;
  • With a long-term sustainable perspective, Cablotech already began a process of energy self-sufficiency in 2008 with the installation of a 47-kW photovoltaic system. At the same time, all asbestos components in the plant have been disposed of, replacing them with a thermal insulation base;
  • Thanks to a redefinition of internal processes, methane gas consumption is reduced by 50 percent;
  • The old 400w lamps were replaced with new 200w LED lamps that are brighter and therefore more efficient and reduce consumption;
  • 8 adiabatic coolers were installed for better internal comfort and therefore improved working conditions for the operators.

Cablotech green company

Cablotech green company

Cablotech’s primary objectives have always been to Protect and improve the work environment by adopting solutions capable of optimizing it in a sustainable way by developing the economy and promoting the well-being of people.

In 1969 John McConnell, during theUNESCO Conference in San Francisco, proposed to “celebrate the life and beauty of the Earth to promote peace” with the aim of inducing all men to take serious measures to preserve and renew the ecological balance on which all life on Earth depends. The proposal gained a strong consensus and the first celebration of Earth Day was on April 22nd, 1970. The event, with a purely ecological character, now involves more than 180 countries and is celebrated every year all over the world.
On September 25th, 2015, the United Nations approved the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and since 2019 Europe has placed the “Green Economy” at the center of its policy, inviting “to work from an international perspective, encouraging countries, ‘industry and people to join in this mission”.

Since 1993, the year of its foundation, Cablotech has always shared these principles aimed at preserving the environment, trying to adopt all the tools available to act daily as a green company. It began with the separate collection of plastic, paper, cardboard and the disposal of waste from the processing of electrical cables to ensure the recovery of copper wires, in compliance with the environmental laws governing the complex sector of special waste.

In 1999 the company moved to its current 3200 square meter headquarters. During the renovation phase, all the asbestos roofing was disposed of and replaced with a thermal insulating base on which a 47 kW photovoltaic system was placed, sufficient to cover the company’s energy needs.

Over the years, the company has never stopped integrating new tools that promote energy saving and improve the lives of its employees.
The previously used boiler has been replaced with a new condensing one; the windows were replaced with double glazing to optimize thermal insulation.
The lighting system has also been renewed: the lamps have been replaced with a new LED system which not only improves the visual effect for workers, but is also allowing a 50% consumption reduction. An adiabatic cooling system was installed which leads to an improvement in the internal temperature with a reduction of ¾ degrees. Finally 200 m² of green area were created.

Cablotech persists in the transformation process into a green company with the aim of operating responsibly in compliance with international standards to improve energy efficiency by exploiting renewable sources, reduce energy costs to optimize the budget dedicated to production and increase its reputation.

According to a recent study by Unioncamere, in recent years there has been a real acceleration of companies investing in green to promote sustainability and efficiency (source). If the number of companies oriented and adhering to these aspects is constantly growing, it follows that the Green Economy has evident positive effects, not only limited to the environmental issue, but they also affect competitiveness, favouring company performance.

We hope these evidences will push companies, which still didn’t, to convert by adopting more sustainable models.
